Start with the oil, not with parts
Variable valve timing is a hydraulic system that happens to be electronically controlled. The phaser is rotated by pressurised engine oil routed through a solenoid valve. Everything that degrades oil — extended change intervals, the wrong viscosity, a slow leak dropping the level, a worn pump — degrades VVT response first, because the oil passages feeding a phaser are among the smallest in the engine.
On engines under 100,000 miles, an oil change with the correct spec oil and a clean of the oil control valve resolves a large share of these codes with no parts bought at all. That is worth doing before anything else, and it costs a fraction of a phaser.
Cleaning the oil control valve is usually free
Remove the exhaust-side OCV and look at its inlet screen. If it is packed with varnish and sludge, that restriction alone can starve the phaser. Brake cleaner, a soft brush, and a functional check with 12 V takes about half an hour and frequently ends the diagnosis. Replace the valve only if it will not move freely after cleaning, or fails the energised air-flow test.
Driving with P0015
The engine runs. It will feel flat in the mid-range, idle less smoothly than it should, and use more fuel. Short trips are fine. What is not fine is ignoring it for months when the underlying cause is low oil pressure — that same low pressure is starving bearings and the timing chain tensioner, and those failures are engine-rebuild territory rather than a solenoid. If oil pressure is confirmed low, treat it as urgent.
