That fresh air contains oxygen, which the O2 sensor reads as a “lean” condition. Even a tiny pinhole leak between the catalyst outlet and the downstream sensor can bias the reading enough to set P2096.
The fix is the leak — replacing the sensor without fixing the leak will set P2096 again within days.
